about

This is pure tenderness, the piano so restrained, no sudden movements, just a sureness of touch that comes only when the mind is in the moment, blessed by presence. Kharit means ‘friend’ in Wolof. “I was inspired to write the song by the many facets of friendship I have in my life,” Seckou says. “Not only me, but also people close to me, when I see them with their friends. Actually, the real meaning of kharit is ‘my other half’ or ‘the half cut from me’. Khar means something you’ve cut, or that has been cut from you. You can’t buy or create that. It can only happen naturally. Friendship can build love, family, marriage, even a whole neighbourhood.”

lyrics

(Mandinka)
Tériya tériya n’talanté nanan djélé nfé
Friends, friends, my other half, smile along with me

(Wolof/Mandinka)
Kharito kharito aah kharito moy sa nguéné waleu tériya té sang-na
Friends, friends, a real friend is your other half (you can’t buy friendships)

(Mandinka)
Siñio ya ka wululé longuo ka wulu bading-ya kawululé tériya
A neighbourhood can create it,knowing someone for a long time can create it, family can create friendship too.

(Mandinka)
Aak kano ka wululé bading-ya sii diang fanan ka wulule tériya
Friendship can create love, family, or the whole neighbourhood.

(Wolof)
kharito djurr na mbok kharito dem-basey kharito badon ben-na kahrito fort nalol
Friendship can give birth to and extend your family. It can create marriage. It can bring together two friends to become one.

kharito djurr na mbok kharito dem-basey kharito badon ben-na kahrito fort nalol
Real friendship is naturally strong. You can’t buy it.
